Frequently asked questions

Q.  Power is going to  be interrupted to our business / home. Can I hire a generator and connect it up myself?

No, it is illegal for anyone other than a qualified electrician to carry out any electrical work. Please call 1300 350 706. We will offer you a competitive quote for an SGH Electrician to connect the generator and ensure that the installation is safe and complies with regulatory requirements.

Q. Power will be interrupted to my business / home. Can I hire a generator and arrange for an electrician to connect it up for me?

Yes, a competent electrician with generator knowledge can connect a generator to a building. The electrician should be aware that there are strict rules governing connection of a generator to an occupied building. The electrician must take extreme care to ensure that there is no risk of back-feeding electricity into the mains power system as this could have fatal consequence for power company staff working on the power lines in the street.

Additionally the electrician is required by law to engage an independent Licensed Electrical Inspector (LEI) to verify that the installation is safe. Once inspected, paperwork needs to be completed and submitted to the relevant regulatory body in your State.

If in doubt call 1300 350 706 and we will provide a qualified electrician with the knowledge and experience to ensure that the installation is safe and complies with regulatory requirements.

Q. I have been asked to order generator on behalf of my company, but don't know what to ask for.

Given the consequences of making a mistake, call us on 1300 305 706 before wasting your valuable time trying to go it alone. Our advice is totally free and you are not obliged to hire a generator from SGH if you choose not to.

Q. I need to hire a generator for a small event. Will I need an electrician to connect the leads?

No, an electrician is not always required. The type of generator used for events typically has 'plug and play' outlets fitted which means that you simply need to plug in the equipment, start the generator and turn on the switches. Commonsense safety measures should be taken. Never lay the cables on the floor, especially when operating in wet conditions. Ensure that cables do not become a tripping hazard.

We strongly recommend you call us beforehand on 1300 305 706 to discuss your plans. We can make some helpful suggestions and we happily offer free advice in the interest of helping you to run a safe event.
